About us

Aside from responding to fires and other emergencies, and giving fire safety education to householders and the wider community, DSFRS have a duty to enforce fire safety legislation. Rather than achieving compliance through legal actions, we would prefer to assist businesses to comply by giving useful, suitable, timely and free advice.

We offer

Our Business Support Services are focused on ensuring that the non-domestic buildings in which people work, visit and enjoy their leisure time, are provided with facilities that will ensure a safe means of escape in the event of a fire starting.

We will enforce the law so that members of the public and local employees are protected from the risk of death and injury caused by fire.

Fire protection activities will be targeted at those premises we believe, through an evidence based approach, to present the greatest risk to the community (based on the Regulators Code and the Hampton Principle) using numerous data sets and intelligence.

Note - DSFRS do not visit premises at the request of the business

The range of Business Support activities include:
  • Fire safety checks
  • Fire safety audits
  • Building regulation consultations
  • Providing tailored advice – In first instance the advice we give will maybe generic     in line with the fire safety order and Government Guidance provided in the ‘Fire     Safety Risk Assessment' guides available from this website - Fire safety law and     guidance documents for business - GOV.UK
  • Education and compliance events – held throughout Devon and Somerset aimed     at specific sectors of the business community
  • Work jointly with other Regulators or Authorities to reduce duplication and     improve consistency
  • Support the Primary Authority Scheme
  • Prohibit or restrict the use of buildings if there is a serious risk of death or serious     injury
  • Prosecute, in exceptional circumstances, when the situation risks life and there is     no other option left.

There is so much more to the modern fire and rescue service than just putting out fires. Our staff spend their time working to keep their communities safe and helping to prevent fires and other incidents occurring. A key part of our role is to ensure we are able to respond when you need us the most, but that’s not only responding to fires.

We respond to floods, road traffic collisions, rail, confined space rescue and much more. We recognise that working to prevent these incidents occurring is far better than relying on emergency intervention. Working with our partner agencies such as the police and local councils we aim to ensure we work with those members of the community that need us the most. We carry out home safety checks, work with local businesses to ensure they keep you safe in your place of work or recreation, we investigate the causes of fire, work with young people to educate, inform and involve as well as a host of other community based activities.

Take a look at our ‘Your Safety’ pages to see all our prevention advice for both at home and for businesses.
