Isles of Scilly Farmers & Growers Initiative (IOSFGI)

Trenoweth, St Mary's, Isles of Scilly, TR21 0NS
01720 422544

About us

The IOSFGI was initiated by five farmers on the islands, in conjunction with the Duchy of Cornwall, and its purpose is to drive capacity and resilience in the agricultural sector on the islands. It is a fully funded project through Defra and the EU, and will run until December 2013.

We are lucky to have been given a further 12 months of funding to continue with the IOSFGI, and we have a great deal planned before December 31st 2014 (have a look at the Calendar of Events page for more details), but we are always open to suggestions, and if you have any specific requests, please let us know.

We offer

Isolated  geographically and unable to easily access opportunities for skills and training offered through mainland RDPE projects, the Initiative aims to mitigate some of the costs and problems associated with agricultural life on the islands.  The aim of the project is to encourage information sharing and capacity building initiatives  – knowledge transfer, vocational training, collaborative working and purchasing, access to professional advice and help in accessing the wider RDPE programme.

These objectives will be achieved through farm walks, informal information sharing sessions and demonstration events; an email information hub and website and bulk purchasing of commodities.  An in depth skills audit was undertaken, during which we spoke to most of the growers and farmers on the islands and the results of this audit are helping us to prepare a programme of training opportunities for the coming months - see here for planned sessions on the islands and here for on-going training opportunities on the mainland.

Benefits

The purpose of our website is a simple one – to pull together as much relevant information as possible, in an easily accessible manner.

We will be offering a schedule of training courses and days (here and on the mainland); details of farm visits, past and future; opportunities for bulk buying; technical information; industry meetings and anything else we feel will be useful to the farming community
