About us

The Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (Nuclear AMRC) is a collaboration of academic and industrial partners from across the civil nuclear manufacturing supply chain, with the mission of helping UK manufacturers win work at home and worldwide.

The Nuclear AMRC brings together the experience and resources of industry leaders with the expertise and innovation of leading universities.

We are part of the University of Sheffield, and form a world-leading manufacturing and engineering cluster alongside the pioneering AMRC with BoeingCastings Technology International and the AMRC Training Centre, all based at the Advanced Manufacturing Park in South Yorkshire.

Our applied manufacturing research is underpinned by the nuclear and materials technology expertise of The University of Manchester Dalton Nuclear Institute.

We are led by our industrial members, but companies don’t have to take full membership to take advantage of our capabilities and expertise. Our manufacturing innovation capabilities and supplier development services are open to all UK manufacturers.

We are part of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult, an alliance of seven leading manufacturing research centres backed by Innovate UK (formerly the Technology Strategy Board). This allows us to tap into a national network of manufacturing research excellence – if a particular technology falls outside our areas of expertise, we can call on our Catapult partners for the support you need.

Development of the Nuclear AMRC has been part-funded by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and the European Regional Development Fund. Our civil nuclear Sharing in Growth and Fit For Nuclear programmes are part-funded by the Regional Growth Fund.

We offer

The Nuclear AMRC is here to support manufacturers, from SMEs to global giants, which are seriously interested in winning business in the civil nuclear sector.

We offer a wealth of targeted support services and tailored products to manufacturers, from free advice and expertise on manufacturing, procurement, quality and industry issues through the Ask Nuclear service; to industry-led skills and training through our hosting of the National Skills Academy for Nuclear Manufacturing. Our Fit For Nuclear programme is an increasingly recognised benchmark for companies preparing to enter the civil nuclear supply chain.

Our supplier development services and manufacturing innovation capabilities are open to all UK manufacturers, and cover the nuclear new-build, decommissioning and operations markets.

We can collaborate on specific R&D projects, using our expertise and facilities to help resolve your manufacturing problems and give you real competitive advantage. Your company invests directly in the research and has exclusive access to any resulting intellectual property. We can also join or lead externally-funded collaborative research projects.

Companies with a genuine interest in the nuclear sector can register for the secure area of this website, to gain access to a discussion forum, document library and other exclusive features.

We also offer full membership, giving you access to our generic projects and the opportunity to determine our core research.

Benefits

The Nuclear AMRC helps UK companies win work in the civil nuclear sector – in new build, operations and decommissioning.

We work with businesses in two ways:

  • Manufacturing innovation – working with manufacturers to develop the technical capability to compete on cost, quality and delivery, and developing new techniques and technologies for the nuclear sector.
  • Supplier development – helping UK manufacturers compete globally in the civil nuclear sector by raising quality, capability and cost competitiveness.

Our capabilities and services are open to all UK manufacturers. To find out more about how your business can access our capabilities and expertise, see our introduction to our services and products.

All our work is led by our member companies, ensuring that everything we do provides lasting value to businesses. Membership is open to any company which works in a complementary area or which wishes to participate in the support of our research or business development programmes.
