About us

We are part of a national network of Community Foundations, charities dedicated to strengthening local communities, creating opportunities and tackling issues of disadvantage and exclusion. We make a difference by directing grants to local charities and voluntary organisations that make a genuine and lasting impact on the lives of local people. Importantly, Community Foundations are independent and “Cause-neutral”. Our only agenda is to make sure that local giving meets the most pressing local needs.Community Foundations have been active in the UK since the 1980’s. There are approximately 60 Foundations now established across the country covering about 90% of the UK population.

Somerset Community Foundation was set up in 2002 to provide a new independent funding body to tackle poverty and disadvantage throughout Somerset. The Foundation has two unique characteristics: We are able to support a diverse range of charitable causes across Somerset, which means that the Foundation can respond to the specific and changing needs of each community. We also provide a flexible, professional and personal 'donor service' to help them achieve their specific charitable goals within Somerset. At the heart of our approach is a strong belief in the importance of helping communities respond to their local circumstances in their own way.

We offer

Somerset Social Enterprise Fund

The Somerset Social Enterprise Fund (SSEF) has been established with initial funding from Somerset County Council  to provide loan finance to support new and established social enterprises.

Whilst the SSEF is primarily a loan fund, there is scope for an element of grant funding.

The SSEF is intended to:

  • Improve access to finance for social enterprises in Somerset
  • Increase the number of social enterprises in Somerset attaining the ‘Social Enterprise Mark’
  • Enable and support measurable improvement in benefits delivered to local communities through increasing activity of social enterprises

A key attribute of the SSEF will be that loan repayments and interest will be ‘recycled’ into further loans and, thus, the fund will be self-sustaining.

Features of the SSEF include:

  • Loan amounts from £10,000 to £100,000
  • Flexible and tailored packages – secured and unsecured
  • Fixed interest rates
  • On-going supportive relationship

Each loan will be made subject to general and specific terms and conditions.

Each loan will be subject to a 1% fee, that may be added to the loan and which contributes to costs incurred in establishing and maintaining the SSEF.
