The Isles of Scilly Local Action Group is a community led partnership who in association with the Council of the Isles of Scilly successfully bid for £2.25m from the Rural Development Programme for England to invest in projects that benefit the community, economy and environment of the Isles of Scilly.
The natural beauty of both the built and natural environment of the Isles of Scilly is outstanding, it not only makes the islands an incredible place in which to live, but it also underpins its success as a top tourist attraction. This is complemented by a strong socio-economic heritage based upon the traditional industries of fishing and farming. However the islands also suffer a number of economic problems, such as low levels of economic productivity, peripherality, and a business base which has become acutely dependent upon tourism - in which wages are traditionally low. Socially although the islands have a strong sense of self and love of their island home, access to basic services which many mainland small communities would accept as the norm can be either non-existent, particularly in the case of the four off-island communities, or prove both expensive and difficult to access on a regular basis.
This combination of factors provides opportunities to transform the fortunes of the islands economy and community - the Isles of Scilly Local Action Group has been set up to help make this happen and is hopeful that local groups and businesses will come forward with exciting new ideas to help the islands make the most of this fantastic funding opportunity.
We believe that there is enormous potential to start making a difference now!
