Background
Tolchards was formed in 2010 by managing director Jim Mardell who wanted to create a locally owned drinks company that would be more responsive to local customer demands than the ‘one size fits all’ approach offered by national distributers.
The company operates mainly in the Southwest, with most of its customers within a 45 mile radius of Newton Abbot. Currently Tolchard’s clients include a range of hotels, sports and golf clubs, bars and restaurants.
GAIN - the benefits
Jim Mardell heard about the PWGF from a local Federation of Small Businesses group and approached Plymouth University. He was offered a choice of mentors to help with the application and chose Tom Kingston from the accountants firm Francis Clark
Tolchards needed systems to complement and support the company’s growth, in particular a new online ordering function and a design capability to add value for its customers.
Jim Mardell said: “The University was extremely responsive and helpful as were Francis Clark whose support was vital in compiling our successful bid. Most of our competitors have online ordering so this was an important aspect for our customers and to encourage new private sales, which could benefit from regular special offers or limited ranges.
“The ability to support our customers through a bespoke design service for wine lists or tasting evenings adds real value to our offering and is something we are also able to offer through the PWGF award.”
Through the award Tolchards has created three new jobs; two warehouse staff to cope with increased demand and one to operate the new design service.
Results and the future
- The creation of three new jobs
- Update processes and functionality plus a design service
- Opportunities to enter new markets
- Gaining ground on competitors
