Explore how best to position Plymouth for health service changes
Business leaders and healthcare professionals from across the South West are to discuss how major changes to public healthcare services can benefit Plymouth.
The New Face of the NHS: Challenges and Opportunities will take place on 26 February 2013 at Tamar Science Park.
Organised by Plymouth Chamber of Commerce on behalf of the city's Growth Board and sponsored by Plymouth Community Healthcare, the high-profile priority sector event is being held specifically for medical and healthcare employers and providers.
The medical and healthcare sector, which employs over 13,000 people in Plymouth, is one of six priority sectors for Plymouth which also includes: creative industries, advanced manufacturing, tourism and leisure, marine and renewables, and business services.
As of April 2013, GPs will take responsibility for local commissioning of healthcare services and the public health function will transfer from the NHS to Plymouth City Council. Service priorities and resource distribution will be controlled locally and there will be a renewed focus on prevention as opposed to cure.
In the lead-up to these major changes, February's event is expected to attract over 80 people including clinicians, managers and GPs from the NHS, private sector companies and not-for-profit organisations.
Key topics will explore how the new healthcare landscape will operate and what can be done to make it best work for the people of Plymouth.
Leading speakers will include Ann James, Chief Executive of Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust; Angela Pedder, Chief Executive of Royal Devon and Exeter Foundation Trust; Dr Peter Rudge, Chair of the Western Locality Clinical Commissioning Group, and Councillor Susan McDonald.
Plymouth Chamber's Cate Taynton, who is the medical and healthcare sector co-ordinator for the Growth Board and is organising the event, said: "With Derriford Hospital, Plymouth University, Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry and prominent businesses in the private and not-for-profit sectors, such as Plymouth Community Healthcare, there is huge opportunity for the medical and healthcare sector in Plymouth.
