Two pioneering health organisations join Tamar Science Park

Two organisations leading the way in health technology research and development have become the first businesses to join Tamar Science Park in 2013.

The National Autistic Society and FTR Mobile Support are both opening new offices at the Park this week, joining more than 80 other businesses in the science, technology, medicine and knowledge sectors.

For the National Autistic Society (NAS), which will move into its new office on 18 January, the office at Tamar Science Park will be the base for testing new online and mobile support services for people with autism.

Using the latest in computer technology, the NAS is able to provide easily accessible online support to help people with autism, and the charity has recently won a tender through Plymouth City Council to provide a befriending and mentoring e-buddy programme to support local people.

The NAS employs 3,500 members of staff across in the UK. The new office at Tamar Science Park will accommodate one full time and two part time members of the social care support team.

Catriona Daynes, the National Autistic Society's Area Manager for the South West of England said: "Tamar Science Park was a natural choice for our new Plymouth office, as it combines top quality office facilities with specialist business support and is well known for its links with the healthcare sector. With the new contract we have with Plymouth City Council it will provide the perfect base for our social care support team to develop innovative new ways of providing online and mobile support for local people with autism."

FTR Mobile Support, which has already moved into its new office at Tamar Science Park  also operates in the healthcare technology industry, supplying telecare solutions to help vulnerable people.

In December 2012, the company launched a new, easy to use, mobile telecare device, pre-programmed with emergency contact details for family, friends or the emergency services. The device uses a mobile rather than landline to allow more information to be transmitted and a roaming SIM to keep users connected.

FTR is relocating to Tamar Science Park from its previous base at the Business Centre on Cattedown Road, to give the company the space it needs to grow its staff and attract new customers.

Managing Director of FTR Mobile Support Kevin Kodritsch said: "With the business starting to gain momentum and the launch of our new product in 2012, we needed to move offices and Tamar Science Park seemed like the ideal platform to work from. The Park is well known as a hub of medical research and development, and I am looking forward to having the opportunity to network and meet like minded organisations, as well as taking advantage of the support services available."

Tamar Science Park provides a complete business environment for its clients, with a broad range of business support services on offer as well as high quality office accommodation and resources.

The Park welcomed 14 new clients in 2012, and now more than 80 businesses in total are now based there, employing around 650 people and turning over £95m.

Simon Chamberlain, Chairman of Tamar Science Park, said: "Tamar Science Park has become a very attractive place for businesses in the healthcare sector to choose as their base, with great potential for pioneering research and development to take place. I am delighted that the National Autistic Society and FTR Mobile Support have decided to move here, and I hope that the high quality working environment and wide range of business support services we offer will help both companies continue to grow."

Businesses based at TSP have full access to the support and services offered by the Growth Acceleration and Investment Network (GAIN), of which TSP is a founding partner.
