Research project to benchmark best practice for companies in Plymouth

Plymouth Chamber of Commerce is embarking on a forward-thinking research project in partnership with youbecome® to find out how effective Plymouth businesses are in managing their people in difficult economic times.

The project will aim to identify how businesses are meeting the challenges presented by a difficult economic environment, how well they are motivating and maintaining employee morale and what they can do to improve this.

youbecome®, an organisation which specialises in customer retention and employee engagement, will work closely with up to 30 participating companies from various industries to ensure that they are appropriate for the research and that they can commit to the follow-up actions of their personal report.

The personal reports will analyse all elements of the participants' business, identifying key strengths and development needs in leadership, line management, morale and confidence, the appraisal process and training. It will also give an overall employee satisfaction score.

The overall research results will be analysed by SERIO, a part of Plymouth University. The results will then be presented at a seminar, which will benchmark best practice and identify solutions to support all Plymouth businesses in the future.

David Parlby, Plymouth Chamber Chief Executive, said: "We are very excited to be working with youbecome® and SERIO on this research project. Motivating and maintaining morale is a big part of successful employee management and engagement, which are fundamental to improving the productivity of a workforce.

"The results of this research will not only benefit the participants but also enable us to gain a real understanding of businesses' outlook for the future and how we can support them."

Mike Turner, Founder and Managing Director of youbecome® said: "I am delighted and excited that youbecome® will be working so closely with Plymouth Chamber and SERIO on such an important project. Most organisations recognise that people make or break their success and this project will show each participating business just how effective they are at managing their people. It will also show how Plymouth compares as a place of work to other regions of Britain."

Adrian Dawson, Director of SERIO at Plymouth University added: "We are pleased to be involved in this project. It will provide us with an invaluable insight to how businesses are faring in tough economic times, and the morale and motivations of their staff. This insight will add to our other business intelligence, providing a rich seam of evidence to help us assess what makes businesses successful."

Participating companies will be selected from the Chamber's membership. For more information, visit www.plymouth-chamber.co.uk  or email Rose Mortimor at [email protected]
