NHS screening programme opens Tamar Science Park office

The NHS has opened a new office at Tamar Science Park to combat a disease that affects one man in 25 and kills around 15,000 people in the UK each year.

The Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening Programme (AAA Screening) moved into its new office on Tuesday 3rd April, joining more than 80 other businesses in the health, science, technology, digital and knowledge sectors which are already based at Tamar Science Park.

Part of a national NHS programme, Peninsula AAA Screening is working with the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust and Plymouth Hospitals Trust to offer routine screening for abdominal aortic aneurysms to patients in Plymouth and parts of South West Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

AAA Screening involves pain-free ultrasound scan of the abdomen that usually takes less than 10 minutes and aims to reduce deaths from ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms through early detection, appropriate monitoring and treatment.

The screening is currently being offered to men aged 65 and over, who are in the highest risk group for developing an abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Peninsula AAA Screening will have two full time members of staff working at the new Tamar Science Park office, with five technicians working across Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly carrying out screening.

Tracey Ellis, Manager and Co-ordinator for Peninsula AAA Screening said: "When we decided to move from our previous base in Saltash we looked at several premises in and around Plymouth, but Tamar Science Park had the best offer in terms of both value and facilities. One of the most important things for us is patient confidentiality - we used to work in an open plan office which made it difficult to have private conversations, but our new office is a self-contained unit which will completely solve that problem.

"Tamar Science Park also has the advantage of being well located for travelling to other parts of Devon and Cornwall, which will benefit our technicians travelling to clinics across the area. Since the programme began in 2010 we have screened more than 12,000 patients, and working from our new office we will be able to continue to operate life saving screenings across the region."

AAA Screening is the fifth business to open a new office at Tamar Science Park so far this year. Companies based at Tamar Science Park benefit from a broad range of business services, as well as enjoying high quality office accommodation and resources.

Simon Chamberlain, Chairman of Tamar Science Park, said: "Healthcare is a key sector for Tamar Science Park, and with more and more companies in the industry joining the Park the potential for pioneering research and development projects is fantastic. I am delighted to welcome AAA Screening, and wish them the best of success in their new office.

Businesses based at TSP have full access to the support and services offered by the Growth Acceleration and Investment Network (GAIN), of which TSP is a founding partner.

Julian Beer, Pro-Vice Chancellor of Plymouth University said: "The arrival of AAA Screening is great news and strengthens Tamar Science Park's growing reputation for supporting the health and wellbeing sector. The Park is also well aligned with Plymouth University's Medical and Dental School and Derriford Hospital both located close by, and with AAA Screening joining the family a really strong cluster is developing."

Council Leader Tudor Evans added: "I'm delighted to see more new tenants moving to the park. Tamar Science Park has had an incredible start to the year and is welcoming companies that represent the sectors that will help the city's economy to flourish. The medical sector was one area we had hoped to encourage and I'm glad that the park's facilities have attracted yet another high-calibre organisation."
